What does it take to export rice from Kandla or Mundra?

Rice exports need the invoice, packing list and shipping bill, a phytosanitary certificate from plant quarantine and usually a fumigation certificate. Basmati exporters also register with APEDA. Rice is bagged, loaded into lined containers or bulk vessels, and cleared at Kandla or Mundra. Rice export policy changes, so current DGFT rules apply.

Kandla and Mundra are among India's main rice export ports, both close to our Gandhidham office. We check the export policy for your variety, arrange fumigation and the plant quarantine inspection, and time the stuffing to the vessel.

Packing & handling

How should rice and agri cargo be packed?

Moisture and pests are the risks. Packing and fumigation protect the cargo on a long voyage.

Bagged to spec

PP or jute bags at the weight the buyer specifies, marked with the variety and lot.

Lined containers

Kraft paper or liner on the walls and floor so bags do not touch bare steel.

Moisture control

Desiccants in the container to limit condensation on long voyages.

Fumigation

Container or cargo fumigated and certified before the phytosanitary inspection.

Plant quarantine inspection

Samples inspected and the phytosanitary certificate issued.

Container or bulk

Containers for bagged cargo; bulk vessels at Kandla for large non-basmati lots.

How does a rice export move through the port?

Plant quarantine and fumigation sit on the critical path. They are booked with the container, not after it.

FAQ

Agri & Rice questions

Documents, packing, ports and timing for agri & rice cargo.

Cargo already at the port?

The clearance desk is open 24 hours.

What documents are needed to export rice from India?

The invoice, packing list and shipping bill, a phytosanitary certificate from plant quarantine and usually a fumigation certificate. Basmati exporters also need APEDA registration, and many buyers ask for a certificate of origin and a quality and weight certificate.

Is rice export from India restricted?

Rice export policy has changed several times, with restrictions, duties or minimum prices on some varieties at different times. We check the current DGFT notification for your variety before booking, because a policy change can stop a shipment at the port.

What is a phytosanitary certificate?

It is a plant health certificate issued by India's plant quarantine authority after inspecting the cargo. It confirms the goods are free of pests as required by the importing country, and most buyers' customs will not release rice without it.

Does rice need fumigation before export?

Usually, yes. Most importing countries require the cargo or container to be fumigated against pests, with a fumigation certificate. It is done before the plant quarantine inspection, so it has to be booked early.

Kandla or Mundra for rice exports?

Both are major rice export ports near our office. Kandla also handles large non-basmati lots in bulk vessels; Mundra has more container sailings on many lanes. We compare them for your order.

How do I stop rice getting damp in the container?

Line the container walls and floor, add desiccants, and make sure the rice is at the right moisture level before bagging. Condensation on long voyages is the main cause of damaged rice claims.

Do spice exporters need a separate registration?

Yes. Spice exporters register with the Spices Board of India. Pulses and other agri products have their own requirements, so we confirm them for your product with the quote.

Can you handle bulk rice at Kandla?

Yes. Large non-basmati lots can move as bulk or bagged cargo in general cargo vessels at Kandla. We handle the stevedoring, the loading and the customs clearance.
