Freight Forwarding & Customs Clearance for Pharmaceuticals

Ahmedabad · Vadodara · cold chain

How are pharmaceuticals exported from Gujarat?

Pharmaceuticals from Gujarat move by air for urgent or high-value lots and in temperature-controlled reefer containers by sea, at the range on the product label, such as 2–8°C or 15–25°C. Exports need the core documents plus a certificate of analysis, and buyers often require a COPP and registration in their country.

Gujarat has one of India's largest pharma clusters, around Ahmedabad and Vadodara. The shipment is only as good as its weakest temperature link, so we book reefers or air space, check the documents and time the handover to avoid cargo waiting in the heat. Imports of medicines and active ingredients are cleared the same way, with the drug controller's licence checked before arrival.

Packing & handling

How should pharmaceuticals be shipped?

Temperature, time and paperwork. A delay on the tarmac can spoil a batch.

Right temperature range

Reefer or packaging set to the labelled range and pre-cooled before loading.

Data loggers

Temperature logged through the journey, as proof for the buyer.

Air for urgent lots

Air freight for short-dated or high-value batches.

Qualified packaging

Insulated or active packaging suited to the transit time.

Minimal waiting

Handovers timed so cargo is not left in the open at the terminal.

Batch documents

Batch numbers and expiry dates matching across every document.

Air or sea

Should pharmaceuticals go by air or by reefer?

Value, shelf life and urgency decide. Many exporters use both.

Process

How does a pharmaceutical export move?

Every handover is a temperature risk, so the plan is built around the fewest and shortest ones.

FAQ

Pharmaceuticals questions

Documents, packing, ports and timing for pharmaceuticals cargo.

Cargo already at the port?

The clearance desk is open 24 hours.

How are temperature-sensitive medicines shipped?

In reefer containers set to the product's labelled range, or by air with insulated or active packaging for urgent or high-value lots. Data loggers record the temperature through the journey as proof for the buyer.

Air or sea for pharmaceuticals?

Air suits urgent, short-dated or high-value batches; sea reefers suit larger, regular shipments with enough shelf life. We compare the cost against the value and shelf life of each lot.

What is a COPP?

A Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product, in the WHO format, confirms a product is licensed and made under good manufacturing practice in the exporting country. Many importing countries' regulators require it to register the product.

What is a certificate of analysis?

A COA shows the test results for a specific batch against its specification. It is needed for almost every pharmaceutical shipment, and the batch number must match the invoice and packing list.

Do pharma exporters need a special registration?

Pharmaceutical exporters register with Pharmexcil, the export promotion council for the sector, and the product must usually be registered in the buyer's country. We check the buyer's requirements before shipping.

What do I need to import medicines into India?

Import of drugs needs registration and an import licence from the drug controller (CDSCO) for the product, plus the COA and the core customs documents. We check the licence covers the product before arrival.

How do you stop cargo overheating at the port?

By timing the handover so the reefer or air cargo waits as little as possible, pre-cooling equipment, and keeping the documents ready so customs does not hold the cargo in the heat.

Can pharma cargo be cleared at an ICD?

Yes. Exporters near Ahmedabad or Vadodara can clear reefer containers at the local ICD, where power points are available, and move them sealed to the port.
